UK vs. Vandy – Preview

Posted by ibleedblue040 on January 11, 2008

It cannot get much worse for the Kentucky Wildcats, they have lost to their biggest rival by double digits on their home floor and is rated 216 in the nation in rpi. But apparently it can get worse, UK plays one of the last undefeated teams in the nation when they invite the Vanderbilt Commodores into Rupp Arena. Vandy has taken 4 straight from the Wildcats and this is by far the worst ‘Cat team of the bunch and the best Vandy team.

Shan Foster decided to stick around for another season and he has been everything Vandy has asked for and more. He is second on team and scoring and rebounding and is a defensive nightmare against any he plays against. The leader for Vanderbilt in points and rebounds falls in the hands of AJ Ogilvy, who is 17th in the country in scoring average at 19.6 per game, who is only a freshman. I know I say this alot but if Kentucky can contain Foster OR Ogilvy they have a legititmate shot at winning.

The hard thing to do against Vandy is to contain both of their stars. Ogilvy leads the SEC in rebounds and is in the top 3 in scoring and he does not just do it from the inside like the other successful big men the Wildcats have played so far this year. Ogilvy will stretch Patrick Patterson out all of the court and could potentially get Patterson in foul trouble early. If that happens Kentucky has no chance at all of winning the game. Foster can also cause the defense problems due to his shooting range/ability and his size. Foster stands at a legit 6’6″ min. and he uses it by backing his man down and shooting over the defenders. Vandy is in the top 5 nationally in 3-point % and scoring avg. in large part to Shan Foster.

My prediction for the game is an ugly one. I think Vandy makes it 5 straight wins  against the ‘Cats with a 87-71 win. I think Foster goes off for 24 pts and Ogilvy has 12 pts and 11 rebounds.
