Wildcat recruit update

Posted by ibleedblue040 on April 3, 2009

Only days into John Calipari’s tenure as Kentucky’s men’s basketball coach, many recruits that committed to the Cats under Billy Gillispie have begun to re-open their commitments. GJ Vilarino and Konner Tucker out of the 2009 class, Dakota Euton, KC Ross-Miller, and Dominique Ferguson out of the 2010 class, and Michael Avery out of the 2012 class have already decommitted from the Cats. Some of the recruits, like Dominique Ferguson, have a good chance of recommitting to the Cats.

Recruiting Trail

– First off today is that Emmanuel Negedu committed to the hated University of Tennessee yesterday according to Jody Demling’s blog. Tennessee is bringing in a very solid class this season, not necesarily loaded with All-Americans, aside from Scotty Hopson they have three 4-star players that all seem to fly under the radar. UT also has a three-star point guard coming in that fits their style nicely as well.

Roburt Sallie also committed to a school located in the state of Tennessee, Memphis according to Jim Tirey of Sallie had originally planed to visit UK this thursday but canceled the visit as he veraballed to the Tigers on his visit there. Sallie is uber athletic and can play the 1, 2, & 3, he was the California JUCO POY this past season in San Francisco.

Rumor Mill – R.I.P. Edition

– R.I.P. Hunter McClintock. No he did not die but it looks as though the internet sensation is going to die. According to Marc Maggard McClintock should not be expecting a scholarship offer from UK at any point. Many people have said he does not make his teammates better and he is not athletic at all, especially to play in the SEC.

– R.I.P. Lance Stephenson rumors. The day after a story broke that Stephenson had added UK to his final three schools his father came out and named off UCLA, USC, Kansas, and St.John’s as his final four schools. And yes St.Johns surprised me as much as you.

-R.I.P. Derrick Caracter‘s NBA dreams. Caracter left UofL to enter the NBA but decided to pull his name out of the draft yesterday and will transfer to another school. It looks like Caracter’s NBA dreams will never be reached, not that they were going to be before.

Other News and Notes

– According to Jody Demling’s blog again, UK signee Dakota Euton has been ruled ineligible to play at Scott County (KY) High School this coming high school season by the KHSAA. I would understand if the reason was because he played last season at Rose Hill (KY) Academy but his teammate Chad Jackson who played last season at Rose Hill as well was ruled eligible. More to come later.

– The 12th annual Derek Smith Shootout Tournament kicks off at Hoops in Louisville, KY tomorrow. I will be attending and for all those that have not heard of the teams involved and schedules you can click here to view all the matchups and times. Some of the key teams involved are: Louisville Manual, Elliott County, Louisville Eastern, Lexington Catholic (Two teams), Louisville PRP, Louisville Male, and Louisville Trinity.

– Do not forget to visit the new UKmadness Message Board. You can join for free to talk about all UK sports, I will update you on info there before I write it here so check it out. Follow this link to visit it now.

– The last note is from this past weekend. WHAT A WEEKEND OF GOLF! This will definitely be the only time I will ever talk good about golf on this blog but I actually sat and watched multiple hours of golf on sunday and monday. That round of golf between Rocco Mediate and Tiger “The great one” Woods was the best I have ever seen. Tiger proved he is a beast and unstoppable this weekend.

Recruiting Trail

* Peyton Siva, a 5’11” guard from the 2009 class, has been quoted as saying that he is now being recruited by Kentucky. Siva is the #31 player in the nation according to and is a four-star prospect. Siva appeared to be close to signing with UofL but has since put that on hold because of all of the offers he has been getting and all of the attention he has been recieving. Siva is from Seattle, Washington, you can check out the story written about him by Jeff Drummond HERE

** Another 2009 prospect that has been recieving attention from UK is a guard by the name of Darius Morris. Morris is a 6’3″ shooting guard but would most likely play point guard in college, he lives in Los Angeles, California and has scholarship offers from Washington State and Michigan. Michigan is his favorite due to the fact that they have been recruiting him the longest. Jeff Drummond also wrote a story abou this kid which you can read HERE.

(John Wall)

*** It is being reported that Travis Ford, the new head coach at Oklahoma State University and former UK player, has made made a visit to John Wall at his school. Wall is considered to be the clear #1 point guard in the class of 2009 and several teams are after him including UK. Wall is rated as the #9 player in the nation and #1 amongst point guards. The teams to be appear to be NC State and Memphis (Especially Memphis).

**** As most of you know by now Vinny Zollo committed to UK on his visit monday. Zollo is apart of the 2010 class and is currently 6’8″ although doctors said he could grow all the way to 7’0″. Zollo is from Ohio and becomes the 1st player in the class of 2011 to commit to the Cats. Zollo is apparently considering a transfer to Lexington Catholic or Scott County High Schools. Scott County High School is the school that Dakota Euton, a 2010 UK commit, and 2010 UK target Chad Jackson attend school.

***** Verdell Jones, one of the last remaining 2008 prospects, committed to Indiana today which was actually a shocker. Jones, 6’4″ 160lbs., cut his list down to Minnesota, UK, and Indiana and was expected to pick Minnesota but landed on the Hoosiers, becoming IU’s 4th three-star recruit of the 2008 class.

****** Jeff Drummond of Catspause had an interview yesterday with Deshawn Painter as well. Painter is rated as the #22 prospect in the 2009 class and the #3 center in the country. Painter has become one of the most recruited players in the nation over the past year or so. The teams that have been after Painter the hardest are Florida, Virginia, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Clemson, NC State and Kentucky. He was thought to be close to committing to Florida but it seems as though that has been put on hold or ended.

Here are a couple videos from the internet that I have dug up:

Darius Morris highlight reel

Peyton Siva highlight reel (Man he has a shot!)

Bobby Maze rap video – This may or may not be THAT Bobby Maze and if it is….. OH MY GODDDD!!!!!! (Warning: This video includes explicit language not suitable for children)
