Recruiting Trail

– The UK Elite Camp took place over the weekend in Lexington and supposedely there were some great turn outs. Daniel Orton, the #1 center in the country, showed up surprisingly even though he is hurt. This has to help UK’s chances that he decided to show up and probably gets the tour of the campus. Jon Hood was there as well and according to this post by Marc Maggard he played very well and was always in control on the floor. Also in that post by Maggard is a list of all the teams participating. Team 1 is loaded, they have GJ Vilarino, Jon Hood, Dominique Ferguson (Who is ultra-athletic according to Maggard), Covington Holmes standout Jerimiah Johnson, & Louisville Trinity star Josh Sewell (Both 2010).

Chrisitan Watford has recieved a formal scholarship offer from Billy Gillispie himself. He was offered face to face by Gillispie over the weekend at the Elite Camp and according to Marc Maggard Watford’s dad and Gillispie were really hitting it off, UK is supposedely leading for Watford’s services now.

Watford visited UofL and UK over the weekend and in this interview Jeff Drummond says that Watford seemed more upbeat when talking about his visit to Little Brother. Watford said his time in Lexington was good, though, saying “The facilities are nice and they treat their players really well. I think Coach G (Gillispie) does a good job with his players.” Watford went onto say that his team was very good and didn’t lose a game during the camp.

– In other recruiting news it’s official, Matthew Pilgrim is a Cat! According to this blog Pilgrim has signed to play for UK in 2010 and 2011 but will have to sit out this season but will get to practice with the team. Pilgrim played for Hampton University last season.

Cool Website Alert

– I was talking to a friend of mine earlier this week and he introduced me to this very cool website. It’s called whatifsports.com and it is based on the idea of comparing sports legends from the past to the present stars. For example, in the NBA Sim league you have $42mil (I think) of cap room to pick 12 players from any year in NBA history and based on some crazy simulation software it actually simulates the games! You can multiple of the same player but from different years, so you could have 1995 MJ on your team along with 1988 MJ.

Recruiting Trail/Rumor Mill

  • As is being reported by many people on the internet, it appears as though Matthew Pilgrim will become the next Kentucky Wildcat. Hoopsreport.com broke a story that Pilgrim was scene in Lexington, KY and scene checking into the Wildcat Lodge, the dorm in which all of the UK basketball players stay. If the report is true, Pilgrim would be required to sit out a full basketball season (2008-2009) and would then join the team for the 2009-2010 season. Pilgrim will be able to practice with the team during his ‘year off’ so going up againts guys like Patrick Patterson on a daily basis would no doubt help improve his skills.
  • The other recruiting rumor flying across the web is that Vinny Zollo will be transfering to Clark County High School in Kentucky. In an interview with WKYT, Zollo says that if he does “Move to Kentucky that’s where it’s gonna be (Clark County)”. Zollo still has three high school years left until he plays for the Cats but being in Winchester, KY means he
  • Another player that UK might or might not have signed is former Nebraska signee Roburt Sallie. Sallie got out of his commitment to Nebraska because he would have been ineligable in the Big 12 and has planed visits to UK, Maryland, Memphis, and Cincinnati.

Player Updates

  • On a slightly different note, Jared Carter and Ramon Harris played another game in their Mali Tour. Jared finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds while Ramon had 11 points and 8 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. If you follow the previous link you can view the team blog that has constant updates.

Recruiting Trail

– As many of you know by now, UK is likely to sign 6’8″ PF Mathew Pilgrim, formerly of Hampton University, for next season. Pilgrim would enroll at UK next school year but would have to sit out a year because of a transfer rule. Pilgrim has been compared to Joey Dorsey because of his height and body build. Here is a picture of Matthew Pilgrim taken last season when he played for Hampton.

If UK signs Pilgrim it looks as though the 2009 class might be wrapped up, the only thing holding me back for sure is that Gillispie continues to recruit several 2009 prospects very hard. That either means he really is not sold on Pilgrim (Pilgrim has not recieved an offer from UK but it has said to be inevitable) and is looking for someone better or another player is “leaving the team”.

– One reason I say this is because Curtis Kelley, a former UCONN Huskie and 5-star prospect, has listed UK in this article among other schools he is contemplating transfering to after he left Connecticut a few months ago. Kelley was rated #27 in the nation in 2005 and is 6’7″ 236 according to his Rivals player page.

– UK has recently gotten involved with 2008 point guard Hunter McClintock, a senior who has flown under the preverbeal radar but has gotten same late interest from UK, IU, and Boston College. McClintock plans to take an unofficial visit to UK and attend their Elite Camp, he should make his decision on school by June, although UK has not offered him.

Other News and Notes

– As most of you know Jon Hood got bumped up to 5-star status in the latest Rivals 2009 rankings while former UK target Deshawn Painter was not so lucky, he moved from 5-star to 3-star in the update and now he has committed to in-state foe Florida. Here is a little run down on the recruits Florida is bringing in (All rankings provided by Rivals.com).

2008

Name

National Rating/Ranking

Position

Height/Weight

Eloy Vargas ☆☆☆☆ (#26 overall) C 6’10”, 210 lbs.
Kenny Kadji ☆☆☆☆ (#27 overall) C 6’10”, 240 lbs.
Ray Shipman ☆☆☆☆ (#91 overall) PG/SG 6’3″, 180 lbs.
Allan Chaney ☆☆☆☆ (#96 overall) SF/PF 6’8″, 220 lbs.
Erving Walker ☆☆☆ (#102 overall) PG 5’6″, 140 lbs.

2009

Name

National Rating/Ranking

Position

Height/Weight

Elrik Murphy ☆☆☆☆ (#63 overall) PF 6’10”, 220 lbs.
Deshawn Painter ☆☆☆ (#110 overall) C 6’9″, 210 lbs.

The point is Florida is loading up pretty good for the next couple of years. Vargas and Kadji are the top two 4-star prospects in the nation according to Rivals.com so that could easily be two 5-star players and they are building around the possibility of also landing Daniel Orton, who is the #1 center in the nation for 2009.
