Recruiting Trail – AAU edition

– Well the most anticipated long weekend of summer AAU basketball is coming to a close today with the LeBron James Nike Camp wrapping up today and the adidas Take 5ive Classic ending yesterday. In this edition of Recruiting Trail we will be discussing how some of the major UK targets and commits performed.

* Jon Hood (Committed, 2009) – From all accounts that saw him play at the LeBron James Camp Hood played a very solid few days of basketball. Many people agree that he did not show off his total package offensively because on many occasions he was reluctant to shoot the basketball in situations many would have, but Hood distributed the ball very well while running the point for spurt at a time. Hood did not get caught up in jacking up shots because the dead period just ended and players are now being exposed to top notch coaches and scouts because, well, he is already committed and he does not care enough about rankings to try to hurt his team to improve his. Hood still showed his brilliant and always reliable jump shot many times to go along with his rapidly improving passing skills. Hood has been quoted as saying that Billy Gillispie wants him to play some point guard at UK so he is getting prepared for that.

* Daniel Orton (UK is leader, 2009) – Orton played in the LeBron Camp this week and he played like, well, the beast that he is. Orton was, as always, too physically gifted to be contained on the blocks and scored at will against every team and player he faced. Orton certaintly did not hurt his rankings and ratings with his performance this week, in fact he probably boosted them.

* John Wall (UK is in top 4, 2009) – Wall once again proved why he is considered the top point guard, and by some the top player, in the country. Wall is just too quick and too athletic for other point guards to handle him. Wall hits the jumper when he is wide open so “Rondo-guarding” him is not an option, but when you get too close it is over as well. Wall is considered a Memphis lean but is also considering UK, Baylor, and Oklahoma State.

* Dominique Ferguson (Committed, 2010) – Ferguson played in the adidas Take 5ive Classic on sunday and played brilliantly. He was the best player on the court in both of the games he played and was an athletic dynamo as well. Ferguson showed flashes of why he is considered a top 10 player by all scouts and once he puts it all together for full games instead of spurts he will be top 5. Ferguson only played sunday because of summer school but really played well.

* Harrison Barnes (UK is in top 5, 2010) – Barnes is probably the fastest rising player in the nation and for good reason. Barnes is ranked 6th nationally by in their latest rankings and with his performance at the LeBron Camp it looks as though he might rise. Barnes was ranked #1 at LeBron camp by Louisville-based recruiting scout Clark Francis among all players, which included John Wall, Xavier Henry, and DeMarcus Cousins to name a few. Barnes is a smooth small forward with college ready shooting ability and size, if he gets a bit stronger there will be no stopping him. UK has yet to offer a scholarship to him but many believe they will wait for Gillispie himself to offer. Barnes is from Iowa so it is believed that the in-state schools have an advantage but could easily be out-recruited.

* Josh Smith (UK is in the mix, 2010) – Smith is the 2010 cross between Keith “Tiny” Gallon and Daniel Orton. He is about 6’10” 270 lbs.. Smith, like Orton had his way throughout the whole tournament because of his strength. When he gets position you might as well put two points on the board because getting around him is almost totally out of the question.

– 2009 shooting guard Terrence Boyd announced this weekend that UK is his leader. He is rated top 50 nationally but grades could be his downfall. He is in serious need of academic help and even with help it looks as though he may not qualify. He did not even play the high school season last year because of grades.

Other Notes

– UKmadness will be coming out with the mid early July recruiting rankings some time this week so be ready for those. We will also be updating them in late July or early August.

Be sure to post on the UKmadness message board here.

Recruiting Trail

– First off today is that Emmanuel Negedu committed to the hated University of Tennessee yesterday according to Jody Demling’s blog. Tennessee is bringing in a very solid class this season, not necesarily loaded with All-Americans, aside from Scotty Hopson they have three 4-star players that all seem to fly under the radar. UT also has a three-star point guard coming in that fits their style nicely as well.

Roburt Sallie also committed to a school located in the state of Tennessee, Memphis according to Jim Tirey of Sallie had originally planed to visit UK this thursday but canceled the visit as he veraballed to the Tigers on his visit there. Sallie is uber athletic and can play the 1, 2, & 3, he was the California JUCO POY this past season in San Francisco.

Rumor Mill – R.I.P. Edition

– R.I.P. Hunter McClintock. No he did not die but it looks as though the internet sensation is going to die. According to Marc Maggard McClintock should not be expecting a scholarship offer from UK at any point. Many people have said he does not make his teammates better and he is not athletic at all, especially to play in the SEC.

– R.I.P. Lance Stephenson rumors. The day after a story broke that Stephenson had added UK to his final three schools his father came out and named off UCLA, USC, Kansas, and St.John’s as his final four schools. And yes St.Johns surprised me as much as you.

-R.I.P. Derrick Caracter‘s NBA dreams. Caracter left UofL to enter the NBA but decided to pull his name out of the draft yesterday and will transfer to another school. It looks like Caracter’s NBA dreams will never be reached, not that they were going to be before.

Other News and Notes

– According to Jody Demling’s blog again, UK signee Dakota Euton has been ruled ineligible to play at Scott County (KY) High School this coming high school season by the KHSAA. I would understand if the reason was because he played last season at Rose Hill (KY) Academy but his teammate Chad Jackson who played last season at Rose Hill as well was ruled eligible. More to come later.

– The 12th annual Derek Smith Shootout Tournament kicks off at Hoops in Louisville, KY tomorrow. I will be attending and for all those that have not heard of the teams involved and schedules you can click here to view all the matchups and times. Some of the key teams involved are: Louisville Manual, Elliott County, Louisville Eastern, Lexington Catholic (Two teams), Louisville PRP, Louisville Male, and Louisville Trinity.

– Do not forget to visit the new UKmadness Message Board. You can join for free to talk about all UK sports, I will update you on info there before I write it here so check it out. Follow this link to visit it now.

– The last note is from this past weekend. WHAT A WEEKEND OF GOLF! This will definitely be the only time I will ever talk good about golf on this blog but I actually sat and watched multiple hours of golf on sunday and monday. That round of golf between Rocco Mediate and Tiger “The great one” Woods was the best I have ever seen. Tiger proved he is a beast and unstoppable this weekend.

Recruiting Trail

  • Dominique Ferguson, a 6’9″ 200 lb. forward from Lawrence North (IN) HS in Indianapolis (Same school that produced Greg Oden and Mike Conley and where Stephen Van Treese, a 2009 prospect currently goes to school), committed to the Cats following an unofficial visit over spring break in which he met the coaches and players. Ferguson becomes the third recruit to sign with Kentucky in the 2010 class joining K.C. Ross-Miller, a point guard from Texas, and Dakota Euton, a forward from Kentucky.

Here are a couple links to find out some information on Dominique Ferguson:

  1.  Catspause article on Ferguson w/ quotes and updates
  2.  Ferguson’s Rivals page
  • Obviously the biggest news of the day was the signing of forward/center Josh Harrellson. Harrellson had been down to UK and Saint Louis before deciding to go to Kentucky, where he might get some starts at center with Patterson next to him at power forward.

  1.  Josh Harrellson podcast (2008-04-29_josh_harrellson_commitment.mp3) from, interview with Harrellson about UK (Before commitment)
  2.  Harrellson interview with Catspause’s Jeff Drummond after his commitment
  3.  Harrellson’s Rivals page
  • Chris Wright, the freshman from Dayton University, WILL NOT be transfering to UK or any other school it looks like. There was a rumor floating around the other day that he was looking to get out of Dayton and was a big UK fan growing up (Which was actually true.
  •  Another recruiting note is that Maurice Sutton, the FORMER UK target has been quoted as saying he is “Pretty much over them (UK)”, so it looks like he will not be coming. Personally I did not want him even before these comments because we already have one 6’10” rail thin forward in Perry Stevenson and no need for another. Some people might think I am holding a grudge against him but in my honest opinion I would not consider UK if I were him because he has been Plan C or D for some time now and it would be better for him to go to a school that really wants him.
  •  Yet another recruiting tid bit about a young high school player. Vinny Zollo (No not Vinnie), a freshman who is 6’8″ kid already, he lives in Ohio and doctors have told him he has a chance to grow to 7’0″ tall. He has a polished game and is getting some interest from some top schools such as UK, Tennessee, & West Virginia. Zollo appears to be a UK fan because he has attended Kentucky’s basketball camp since the 5th grade.

  2.  Catspause story on Zollo (From February)

Rumor Mill

  •  In an interview with’s Jerry Meyer, Scotty Hopson stated that he looks to take official visits to, “Tennessee, Texas probably, Kentucky, maybe Louisville, probably Cincinnati”. Take it for what it’s worth but I think that should be very good news for Kentucky fans because it looks as though Billy Gillispie is officially recruiting Hopson and we might be able to steal his last visit from a team like Cincinnati or Louisville.
  •  Darius Miller, a 2008 signee for Kentucky from Maysville (KY), won the KHSAA State Championship in Kentucky this past weekend when his Mason County High School team defeated Covington Holmes High School in the Sweet 16 finals. Miller tallied 24 points and the MVP award and now has pretty much locked his case for Mr. Basketball for the state of Kentucky.
  •  Roderick Flemings, a 6’7″ UK target for the class of ’08, has said that he will be setting up a visit to Lexington in the near future although he visits UCONN this weekend, some insiders say that he might commit on the spot at UK if he likes what he sees.
  •  This is kind of off the subject but one member of presented the message board with a new website that allows people to take a virtual look at men’s college basketball gym floors.

Check out Kentucky’s Rupp Arena:

And my personal favorite floor, the Oklahoma State court:

Just to let everyone know, my bracket is still doing pretty well. The only teams that I picked to go to the Sweet 16 that are out were: Notre Dame, Clemson, Georgetown (Elite 8), Pittsburgh, & UCONN. I am currently tied for 5th in my bracket pool.

Web Wednesday

Posted by ibleedblue040 on March 5, 2008

Today I start a new segment to the UKmadness blog call Web Wednesday. I said in a post a couple days ago that this segment will feature all the rumors about Kentucky basketball that I have heard and maybe some UK updates.

Rumor Mill

  1.  Chuck Jones, a 6’9″ junior forward from Hopkins Central (KY), is supposedley going to be in attendance for the UK senior night at home against the Florida Gators. Jones might be confused with current Wildcat Perry Stevenson when he steps on the court because, like Stevenson, he is only 190 lbs. Jones averaged 18.4 ppg and 9.6 rpg this season for HCCHS including a 44 pt, 15 reb game and a 27 pt, 15 reb game.
  2.  This one might make you laugh so put down your drink before reading it. Billy Gillispie is supposedley considering the Oklahoma St. job for next season and that is why he has not signed a formal contract yet. To me this rumor is laughable at best because Oklahoma State is definitely a step down from Kentucky and there is no way he would get as much money there, to me this makes no since.
  3.  Verdell Jones, a 6’4″ senior guard from Champaign (IL), is also supposed to be in attendance for UK’s matchup with Florida in the season finale. Jones told that he has been trying to schedule a visit to Lexington for some time now but weather and the success of his high school team have ruined the plans so far, but he is now supposed to come check out the ‘Cats next week.
  4.  Scotty Hopson, the second best remaining senior in the nation, has been named to the USA Junior National Team according to Jody Demling of the Courier-Journal. Hopson was one of ten players chosen, the only player from Kentucky. Hopson still remains a priority for Kentucky on the recruiting trail as UK has drastically picked up their activity on him.
  5.  The last thing I will mention in the rumor mill is a list of all the current players that Kentucky is after according to “insiders”, message board posters & Actual experts:

Chuck Jones – 0 Stars

Verdell Jones – ***

Scotty Hopson – *****

Kevin Galloway – 0 Stars

Jeff Taylor – ***

Derrick Favors – *****

Renardo Sidney – *****

John Wall – *****

Jon Hood – ****

Daniel Orton – *****

Shawne Williams – ****

Shawn Kemp Jr. – ****
